Kim ago I was running Roadrunner ISP with a free trial of an anti-virus/spyware program sponsored by them. I'll also see to it that they get plenty of BAD press in the process. I'll take care of the crippled machine, and I'll get avast off every machine that I own. I could think of several ways to do this without pissing off my customer base. My IT friend and I now know FOR SURE that this is a deliberate file from Avast that is designed to cripple your machine and make you upgrade to a newer operation system, so they don't have to support XP. Since I pay for Avast Internet Security, I reloaded it onto the machine, where it promptly disabled all my protection again. The man works in the IT department for a major retailer in the region (they cover seven states). AVAST UPDATE PROBLEMS WITH XP SP3 OLD COMPUTERS DRIVERSA friend of mine came to the house and got the program removed and restored all the drivers and DLL's that the techs at Avast deleted in their poking around. I finally got one of their techs to admit that the problem was the Avast software itself yesterday at about 1:30 PM. They could not even remove the Avast files themselves. My reason for posting this was because I had the Avast people working on my MAIN machine, and they charged me to remove their own software that will disable your machine and leave it totally wide open. That said, I didn't post this to get into a discussion of software compatibility, or whether someone should upgrade to something else. I won't bore you with all the details, but as a ham, there are a BUNCH of programs out there that won't run on 7.
